Proactive Upgrades: Co-op City’s management must be proactive in planning and implementing energy efficiency projects. Waiting to act will likely result in much higher costs and potential fines.
Government Assistance: The city offers resources and support through the NYC Accelerator, including free assistance and financing options. There may also be state programs available through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Financing Options: Low-interest, long-term financing is available through C-PACE (Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy) loans to help cover the costs of energy-efficient retrofits.
Advocacy: Co-op and condo groups have been actively advocating for amendments to LL97 to provide financial relief and flexibility. Residents can support these advocacy efforts.
Zero Emissions Public Transit & Fleet: Fast-tracked replacements of diesel buses with electric ones, especially on routes that run through or near 82nd; electrification of municipal fleets in the district.
Stormwater/Floor Mitigation Infrastructure: Given flooding issues, invest in green infrastructure: prous pavements, bioswales, rain, gardens, green roofs, improved drainage systems, separate storm and sanitary sewers where feasible.
Air Pollution Reduction and Monitoring: Increased monitoring of air quality; enforce stricture emissions stands for local sources (facilities, truck, buses, etc.); restrict last-mile warehouses or high-pollution industries near schools or residential zones.
Publicly Owned Clean Energy and Renewables: Incentivize or develop community renewable energy projects (solar on roofs, microgrids, etc.), perhaps through public ownership or cooperatives; so that benefits (jobs, lower energy costs) flow locally.
Green Spaces, Parks and Access: Expand parks, tree cover, community gardens, upgrade waterfronts, if applicable; ensure equitable access to safe, healthy outdoor spaces.
Environmental Justice Protections: Explicit requirement that polluting projects underdog community review; health impact assessments; ensure that marginalized communities get strong representation; reparative policies for legacy pollution.
Climate Resilience Planning: Because the Bronx is coastal and flooding prone, prepare for climate change: floodwalls, coastal defenses, elevation of critical infrastructure, planning for heat islands.
Incentivize Sustainable Buildings/Retrofit Existing Housing Stock: Provide subsidies/tax incentives/workforce programs to retrofit older buildings (insulation, lead removal, efficient heating/cooling) to reduce energy burden and improve health.
